Reflection

Jesus' instruction to go the second mile comes in a challenging teaching about responding to mistreatment without retaliation. It is not a command to remain in danger or enable abuse. It does confront our instinct to give only what is required. An unexpected act of service can show a generosity that refuses to be ruled by resentment.
